Pakistan confirms curbs on Islamic group 'Jamaat-ud-Dawa'
Pakistan on Thursday confirmed that it has slapped sanctions on Islamic group "Jamaat-ud-Dawa" in line with a United Nations' decision.
"Jamaat-ud-Dawa and many other organizations are listed by the United Nations sanctions committee, because Pakistan is a member of the United Nations, it automatically incurs us to take action against the entities or individuals that are listed by the UN sanctions committee," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
"We take our obligations very seriously. We try to meet these obligations seriously," Ms Tasnim Aslam said at her weekly briefing.
The spokesperson also confirmed Pakistan has frozen the bank accounts of the group.
"With the banking channels, there is no issue because as soon as the UN committee enlists entities or individuals under the United Nations Security Council resolution we are required to freeze their assets," she said.
"All the accounts of the enlisted organizations and individuals are frozen after the SRO (Statutory Regulatory Order) is issued by the ministry of finance and State Bank of Pakistan."
In response to a question that Pakistan has taken action against the JuD under pressure from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, she said the decision has nothing to do with the visit of the U.S. secretary of state.
"These are the actions that Pakistan is taking for the protection of its own people," the spokesperson said.
