Albanian border police detain 37 illegal immigrants

Albanian border police in the southern city of Gjirokaster detained some 37 refugees, who had entered the Albanian territory illegally, official police sources said Thursday.

Police sources confirmed that the detainees were illegal immigrants: 21 were of Syrian origin, five were Eritrean and seven were Congolese.

According to Albanian Telegraphic Agency, the group of illegal immigrants had entered Albanian territory illegally from Greece and were detained near the village of Glina.

Albanian police said they were working with Greek officials to repatriate the illegal immigrants.

Border police in Gjirokaster have regularly detained a large number of refugees mainly from Afghanistan, Iraq, Tunisia, Syria and Somalia over the past years.
