The Middle East Quartet envoys met on Monday to assess the political outlook for the region and prospects for reviving the Middle East Peace Process.

Envoys of the Quartet, which groups the United Nations, Russia, the United States and the European union  , explored the role that the Quartet could play in supporting the resumption of meaningful negotiations with the aim of achieving a comprehensive peace agreement based on a two-state solution, according to a statement of the European External Action Service after the meeting.

The envoys stressed the importance of engaging closely with their Arab partners, and agreed on the importance of convening a meeting of the Quartet Principals as soon as possible.

They also underscored the urgency of improving the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and agreed that every effort should be made to encourage the fulfillment of pledges of assistance made at the Cairo Conference on the reconstruction of Gaza in October last year.

The Quartet was set up in 2002 to facilitate a peace agreement based on the widely backed two-State solution: a secure state of Israel living in peace with an independent state of Palestine.
