A 33-year-old man arrested in Athens as part of a clampdown on terrorist activities has been extradited and placed under arrest in Belgium, the federal prosecutor confirmed on Thursday.

The Belgium authorities requested the extradition of the man following his arrest in Athens on Jan. 20, in connection with the ongoing investigations into a major jihadist cell that was dismantled by the police earlier in the month.

"Wednesday, Jan. 28, Omar D, born in 1982, an Algerian national, was extradited to Belgium by the Greek authorities," said the prosecutor's office in a statement on Thursday.

"He was charged this morning of participation in the activities of a terrorist group and placed under arrest."

Omar D, is suspected of being a close associate of Abaaoud Abdelhamid, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the jihadist cell, uncovered by the Belgian police in a series of raids across the country on Jan. 15.

Abaaoud Abdelhamid remains at large and is currently thought to be on the run in Greece.
