36,000 people uprooted in Darfur since start of 2015
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that aid agencies have confirmed that 36,000 people have been displaced by fighting between government forces and armed movements in Darfur since January, a UN spokesman told reporters Monday.
"This reflects an increase of about 16,000 newly verified displaced over the past week," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. "OCHA also says that the actual number may be higher as aid organizations are unable to access parts of Darfur's Jebel Marra region due to access constraints and fighting in the area."
Most of the latest arrivals have come to ZamZam and Shagra camps, near El Fasher, he said. "Aid organizations continue to provide basic assistance in these locations."
"This latest wave of displacement is part of a broader deterioration of the humanitarian situation across much of Darfur, " he said. "The UN continues to call on all parties to conflict in Darfur to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure safe, timely and unhindered access to humanitarian organizations."
The United Nations has repeatedly called on all sides to join negotiations aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire and comprehensive peace for the people of Darfur, which has witnessed fighting since 2003.
The Joint United Nations and African union Mission in Darfur ( UNAMID) was established by the UN Security Council in 2007 to protect civilians and help ensure humanitarian assistance in Darfur, where fighting between rebel groups and government forces and allied militia has led to the deaths of an estimated 300,000 people and displaced nearly 2 million over the past 10 years.
