Winter chill to remain in Shanghai

After a week of clear air, it was severely polluted once again. The air quality index kept rising and reached 329 -- severely polluted -- by 11pm last night.

At the same time, the concentration of toxic PM2.5 particles was recorded at a high of 278 micrograms per cubic meter, more than 11 times the figure considered safe by the World Health Organization.

But there will be some respite today with strong winds expected to drive away the pollutants.

Temperatures are likely to drop in the morning for the next few days. It is expected to hover between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius today with the mercury dropping to 1 tomorrow. The city’s meteorological said chilly winter days will be with us for next few weeks.
