At least six people were killed and 12 others injured as a commuter train crashed into a car on rail tracks Tuesday night outside New York city, authorities said.

The six confirmed dead included the driver of the car who was outside her vehicle at the time, and five on the train, CBS quoted the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) as saying. < The accident took place about an hour after the Metro-North train packed with passengers left Grand Central Station at 5:45 p.m. (2245 GMT).

The northbound train slammed into the car, which was on the rails, and pushed it about 150 yards up the track. Both the vehicle and the front of the train burst into flames, according to reports.

The first three cars of the train were evacuated. Passengers were walked to the last train car and then escorted off and shuttled away, it added.

Following the accident, service was shut down on the Harlem Line between North White Plains and Pleasantville of New York. Other lines were unaffected.
