Malawi police chief resigns

Malawi Inspector General Paul Kanyama announced his resignation Friday on the grounds of poor health.

Kanyama, appointed on Nov. 22, 2014, announced his resignation at a press conference held at the national police headquarters in Lilongwe.

He told journalists that "pressure of work in the new position is worsening the diabetes problem" he has and he thought of resigning from the position of Police Inspector General.

The outgoing police chief becomes the first to serve in the position for a shortest period of two and a half months.

During his short term in office, Kanyama took a tough stance on armed robbers and vowed to maintain social security.
