At least seven houses were destroyed on Sunday by a devastating fire in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The fire broke out at Abi Guzar locality of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. However, no casualties were reported in the blaze.

"Seven residential houses were gutted here in an incident of fire," a police official said. "The houses in the congested Abi Guzar locality were inhabited by 26 families."

According to the police, the blaze began in one of the houses and soon spread to adjacent houses mostly constructed in wood.

Officials of the regional Fire and Emergency Services Department said it took around three hours for firefighters to douse the flames.

"We pressed in over a dozen fire tenders to contain the blaze and prevent the flames from spreading to the locality," an official said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated, police said.

A government spokesman said the local administration visited the scene, and distributed cash relief and blankets to the affected families.

Chances of fire in the region increase during winters as households store various types of fuel.

In a similar incident on Sunday, a government-owned heritage rest house was destroyed in Ramban district, south of Srinagar.

"The rest house was constructed in 1931 and was of historical significance," an official said.
