Namibia reiterates call for permanent UNSC seat
The president of Namibia Hifikepunye Pohamba has reiterated his appeal for Africa to be granted a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
"We expect the 70th UN General Assembly to decisively pave the way towards the conclusion of negotiations on the reform of the United Nations System, especially the Security Council. It is indeed high time that the African continent takes its rightful place in the UN system, with an equal voice in the UN Security Council," Pohamba told several diplomats whom he met on Wednesday.
UNSC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security and its powers include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions and the authorization of military action through UN resolutions.
The UNSC consists of 15 members with five permanent members that have veto power namely China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and the United States of America. While Africa is represented only through 10 non-permanent UNSCR members, elected on a regional basis to serve two-year terms.
But in recent years African leaders such as Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and the former president of Namibia Sam Nujoma have been advocating for the 54-state African continent to have permanent representation on the UNSC so that African interests could be served and be propagated.
