Suarez wins over fans in Barcelona win

Luis Suarez had the Barcelona fans chanting his name after he set up Lionel Messi to score the opening goal in a 3-1 victory for the record winner in its Copa del Rey semifinal, first leg at home to Villarreal on Wednesday.

Barcelona's 10th consecutive success in all competitions, its longest winning streak since the end of 2010, put it in a strong position to advance to May's final after the return leg at the Madrigal in three weeks.

It would meet Athletic Bilbao, whose 23 Cup triumphs are only bettered by Barca's 26, or 2006 winner Espanyol, which drew 1-1 in its first leg at Bilbao's San Mames stadium.

Uruguay forward Suarez is taking time to settle in Spain after joining Barcelona from Liverpool in the close season but although he has yet to hit scoring form himself he has impressed with his link-up play and creativity.

He robbed the ball in the 41st minute at the Nou Camp before sprinting forward and laying a perfect pass into Messi's path for the Argentina captain to sweep a first-time shot past keeper Sergio Asenjo.

It was harsh on a well-organized Villarreal side, which had lost captain and midfielder Bruno Soriano to what looked like a serious leg injury around 10 minutes earlier.

Villarreal levelled three minutes into the second period but Andres Iniesta put Barcelona back in front a minute later when he fired a loose ball low into the net and Gerard Pique made it 3-1 in the 64th minute with a header from a Messi corner.

In France, Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani's first goal in five games helped Paris Saint Germain to a 2-0 win over Nantes on Wednesday and a place in the French Cup quarterfinals.

Cavani, criticized for a poor performance in front of goal for the two-time defending champion against league leader Lyon in Sunday's 1-1 draw, struck in the 19th minute with French international midfielder Yohan Cabaye adding a second in the 34th minute.

Cavani, who PSG coach Laurent Blanc had said needed to be helped to get him back on form again, headed home after he ran on to David Luiz' freekick.

PSG's reward for Wednesday's win is a tough looking home quarterfinal against Monaco, which beat Rennes 3-1.
