Four killed in Boko Haram's first attack on Chad
A Chadian soldier, a local leader and two militants were killed Friday during Nigerian militant group Boko Haram's first attack on Chadian soil, a Chadian army statement said.
The fighters crossed Lake Chad in four motor boats early in the morning and attacked Ngouboua village near the lake, Chadian army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa Agouna said.
One Chadian soldier and a local chief were killed, while on the Boko Haram side, two fighters were killed and five injured, he said.
This is the first attack of Boko Haram on Chad since the country began deploying troops in mid-January in Cameroon and Nigeria to fight the group.
Ngouboua hosts about 7,000 Nigerian refugees who fled their homes due to attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria since January.
Lake Chad, once a business hub for neighboring countries, has been paralyzed for months by repeated bloody attacks of Boko Haram on its banks.
Five African countries including Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and Niger announced recently to establish a force of 8700 troops to fight against the militant group.
The leaders of the Economic Community of Central African Countries will meet next Monday to discuss the formation of the troops.
