Iran's supreme leader writes to Obama
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly written lately to U.S. President Barack Obama conditioning better relations on "mutual trust".
The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday on its website that Khamenei was responding to Obama's secret letter sent in October last year, in which the president expressed a "shared interest" in fighting the IS extremist group in Iraq and Syria.
The supreme leader's response in recent weeks was "respectful but noncommittal," the paper said, quoting an Iranian diplomat, noting that a senior White House official declined to confirm the letter's existence.
"Mr. Khamenei said improved relations could only be based on mutual trust," the Iranian diplomat was quoted as saying.
Iran is negotiating with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany toward a comprehensive deal over its controversial nuclear program by June 30, after missing twice self-imposed deadlines over the past year.
