MARTIN: Chuck? We've met. Kendra, do you have children?
KENDRA: No, I don't. Do you have children?

KENDRA: Come with me, Martin. Meet my aunt.
MARTIN: Excuse me, Karen.
KAREN: Good-bye.
KENDRA: This is my aunt. Aunt Geraldine.
GERALD: Is he a Kessler?
KENDRA: No, he isn't.
MARTIN: I'm Martin Learner.
GERALD: Hello.
KENDRA: He's a reporter.
GERALD: I'm happy to meet you.
MARTIN: Thank you. Do you have a family?
GERALD: Of course. I have Kendra.
GERALD: I’m her aunt. And Karen. Karen is Kendra's sister.
MARTIN: We've met. I've met your brother, too.
GERALD: You've met Chuck? Have you met his wife?
MARTIN: Yes, I have.
GERALD: I have a sister, too.
MARTIN: Is she here?
GERALD: Yes.
MARTIN: Is your husband here?

KAREN: How old is the boy?
MARTIN: He's seventeen years old. My daughter is fourteen years old.KAREN: Do you live in a house?
MARTIN: No, we don't. We live in an apartment. Where do you live?
KAREN: I live with my mother and father.
MARTIN: Where is Kendra's home?
KAREN: She's in town. She lives in an apartment.
MARTIN: May I ask some more questions about your family?
KAREN: Yes.
MARTIN: I met two aunts. They are your father's sisters.
KAREN: That's right.
MARTIN: Do you have uncles?
KAREN: I have only one uncle.
MARTIN: And I met your grandparents. They are your father's parents.KAREN: That's right.
MARTIN: Do you have more grandparents?
KAREN: Yes, I do. My mother's parents are living, too.
MARTIN: Where do they live?
KAREN: They live in Florida now. They lived here. Grandfather was a farmer.
MARTIN: What do you do? Are you a farmer?
KAREN: No, I'm not. I work in town. I'm a secretary


Language Points 语言要点

1 .  want, need, like 这类动词后经常要跟“to”，再加上另一个原形动词，这就是英语中的动词不定式结构，例如：
I want to meet Mr Kessler. 我想见凯斯勒先生。
I need to see her. 我得见她。
I like to sing. 我喜欢唱歌。
2 .  Excuse me. 除了在前面学过的用来搭话或插话外，当你要走开时，也要用它，以示礼貌，只不过，语调稍有变化，用降调。
3 .  Are you married? 是用来询问对方婚姻状况，是否结婚了?一般来说，美国人的婚姻状况是属于隐私范围内的，不能轻易问，属于此范围的还有经济收入、宗教信仰、女子的年龄、体重等等。英文中嫁和娶都用同一个词，若侧重行为，用动词 marry，若侧重状态，用动词短语 be married to。例如：She married a sailor. 她嫁给了一个船员。
Some are married to the Kesslers. 一些人与凯斯勒家族的人通婚。
 

Cultural Notes  文化注释

1.英美人的女子结婚后，其姓就要改成丈夫的姓。例如：Miss Yvonne Smith 给了 Mr Chuck Kessler 后，她就要被称为 Mrs (Yvonne) Kessler。
2.美国地域辽阔，一大家人中，有人居住东部(the East)，有人居住西部(the West)，有人住在南部(the South)或中西部(the Middle West)，平常除了彼此用电话联络感情外，如果要聚在一起叙叙旧，通常都是利用较长的假期时间，如 Christmas(圣诞节)，Thanksgiving(感恩节)，the Fourth of July(美国国庆日)，或利用家人的生日(birthdays)的机会，来个小型家庭聚会(small family get-together)。  
 有些家庭每隔二三年，便会固定地举行家庭聚会(family reunion    )，这种场合比较正式，意义也比较深远，叔叔、伯伯(uncles)，姨妈、舅母(aunts)，表兄弟姐妹(cousins)，侄子(nephews)，侄女(nieces)，祖父母(grandparents)等都会设法到齐。
