MARTIN: I don't like to stop my work. Can your mother take you?
SUE: I didn't ask.
MARTIN: Please ask her. I don't want to ask now.
SUE: She's making lunch.
MARTIN: Now? I don't want to eat now. I don't want to stop my writing. Please tell her.

EILEEN: Martin. Come to lunch.

1.turn off, turn down 等动词短语是“动词+副词(或介词)”结构,这类结构在英语中很常见,又如:take off(起飞),sit down(坐下),get up(起床),turn up(到达;出现),put off(推迟),put on (穿上)等等。
2.stop后接不定式(to do sth.)结构和动名词(do+-ing)结构,含义不同,前者意为“停下来去做某事”,后者意为“停止做某事”。例如:
Every half hour I stop to smoke a cigatette.

Cultural Notes  文化注释

典型的美GJ庭是由父母及他们未婚的孩子构成的一种核心家庭。一对美国夫妇有两三个孩子,甚至更多些,都是很常见的。美国人的独立意识很强,每个成年人都应有自立的能力,特别是经济上。小孩高中毕业就不依靠父母生活。有些成年人即使与父母生活在同一城市里,他们也愿意另找住房生活,从不在经济上依靠父母。有不少高中生甚至初中生在晚上或周末打工赚零钱,以支持社交或生活所需的费用。许多大学生读大学也是靠自己假期打工赚回生活费来完成学业的。如果一位已工作的成年人还与父母同住的话,他会被伙伴们嘲笑。
