IOC impressed by Almaty's Olympics bid
The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission said here on Monday that he's impressed with Almaty's bid for the 2022 Winter Games.
When asked what he thought of the Almaty bid on day three of their inspection, Russian IOC member Alexander Zhukov said: "It is a very good impression."
Zhukov made the remarks while the IOC delegation took a break from their site inspections to pose for a group photo in front of media at the Medeu skating rink, but he did not elaborate.
After a tour of the Medeu skating rink, home to over 120 world records and known for its altitude at 1,700m above sea level, the IOC inspectors then climbed aboard the lifts and glided up the mountains to the Shymbulak resort.
Shymbulak will stage the women's and men's downhill, Super-G, and Super Combined competitions, should Almaty win the 2022 Games.
Earlier in the day, the IOC inspection team visited Olympic City, where the Olympic Village and media village would be built from scratch.
"In the long run, the area will serve to meet Almaty's still growing demand for affordable housing. In total, there will be 5, 800 new apartments in this modern and vibrant urban development," said Andrey Kryukov, vice chairman of the Almaty 2022 Bid Committee.
On Tuesday, the IOC inspectors will continue their meetings with Almaty 2022.
Following the conclusion of the visit on Wednesday (February 18) , the Commission will visit Beijing from March 24 to 28 before a final decision is scheduled to be made at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.
