SIPG defender gets China ban over jade pendant

Shanghai SIPG defender Wang Shenchao will be banned from the national team for one year after he was spotted putting on an accessory, which was hidden in his socks, during China's international friendly against Myanmar on May 26.

Wang was sent in as a substitute in the 62nd minute of the match in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. After walking onto the pitch, Wang took out a jade pendant from his left foot sock and put it on, which was caught by the broadcasting camera. China won the match 1-0, thanks to Wu Lei's goal in the 40th. Wearing accessories in a match is against the regulations, though wearing jade pendant — as a sign of good luck — is a common practice among Chinese. 

The China Football Association issued the punishment to Wang yesterday morning, depriving him of an opportunity to be selected for the national team for one year (until May 26, 2019). Wang already posted two apologies through his Weibo account on June 4 and 11 after the incident was debated on social media. SIPG reacted by issuing a 20,000-yuan (U$3,125) fine for Wang. "All coaches and players have to respect the rules and regulations in matches," said the club's statement.
